Cylon Systems Digital HeadCam Helmet Camera System
Stumbled on this company based out of the UK that has put together a classic style helmet camera system using an Archos DVR as the recording system. Cylon’s main focus is security applications, but they do have a product page for a Sports Cam System. This system appears to have some promise! The Cylon System has the standard wires from camera to recorder to remote control to battery pack, but the wiring appears well thought out with custom harnesses. Their website has some sample video clips of BMX riders on indoor half-pipes and also some boxing! Both seem to be good examples of the Archos hard drive based recorder holding up under some g-forces. Hard drive based systems have always been a bit sketchy in my mind because of the massive g-forces I’ve seen our recording equipment experience. Microdrives seem to be doing pretty good lately in this respect. The Cylon specifications state 720×480 for resolution, which is great, but the compression codecs and the hardware in the Archos are not really designed for full NTSC compression quality. Their specs mention a custom 20GB Archos AV4 – most likely this is the AV400. The specs on Archos site for the AV400 state full 30fps, 720×480 PLAYBACK, but recording is MPEG-4 SP – which is 512×384 @ 30fps. So, I’m thinking the Cylon camera may be 720×480, but the compression codec scraps it down to 512×384. All in all, pretty well thought through design – very similar to something the Brothers Lancour attempted to launch a few years back. HCC.com’s recommendation = Call on the compression specs, then get a price, and from there I wouldn’t mind hearing from a guinea pig or two!
